The WAPO article seems to indicate that he actually shot one, but someone else carried it out. I have some doubts about whether he actually shot one. Geese are difficult birds to hunt, even for experienced hunters. . Kerry should stop pretending he's such a hunting buff..!

It would also appear that he is allowing his fingers/hand to touch the metal part of the gun's barrel, a true no-no for most real hunters (my dad taught me this when I was 8-9 years old), as the sweat from one's hand has a corrosive effect on the gun. Oh, and allowing somebody else to carry out your kill is the rough equivelant of having them carry out your jockstrap from the lockeroom after basketball practice: A true friend would refuse to do it.
