What would you say?

Apparently General Mattis said something this week that the Washington Press corp considered to be "offensive".

Allow me to put his comments into historical perspective:

Admiral William Halsey - US 7th Fleet.

halsey-small.jpg

“Before we are through with them, the Japanese language will only be spoken in hell.”

General Curtis Lemay - Strategic Air Command

lemay2.bmp

"You've got to kill people, and when you've killed enough they stop fighting."

Ulysses S. Grant - General of the Army and President.

"I have never advocated war except as a means of peace."

General George S. Patton.
180px-GeorgeSPatton.jpeg

"I want you boys to hurry up and whip these Germans so we can get out to the Pacific to kick the shit out of the purple-pissing Japanese, before the Goddamned MARINES get all the credit!"

And finally, my favorite General says all that needs to be said to the idiots in the press:

General William Tecumseh Sherman

sherman.jpg

"War is cruelty. There's no use trying to reform it, the crueler it is the sooner it will be over."

And in the best retort ever against the "nattering nabobs" in the press, a full 150 years before the advent of modern "advocacy journalism", he said this:

"I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp
rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are. If I killed them all this evening they would be reporting news from Hell before breakfast. "

General Mattis can say whatever the hell he wants as loud as he wants as far as I'm concerned. Just keep fighting and keep winning, all the rest is just words.

I Thank God for men like General Mattis. I find his statements mild by comparison to his historical peers and quite understandable in context of which he was speaking. It took me all of 15 minutes to google-yahoo up these comparitive quotes and had the press taken the same effort, the shock and revulsion they have expressed might have been somewhat lowered. Had they also bothered to listen to his entire speech , that also might have helped, but hey, theres parties to attend and caviar to be eaten, so I guess they have their priorities.

The only people offended by General Mattis are people that are prejudiced and bigoted against members of the military. I'm not sure I care too much about the opinions of bigots...

Bravo, Frank!

I cut and pasted this article and sent it to several friends (all Air Force and Navy types, most out but a few still on active duty).

I credited you, of course, and linked to your original post.

Again, great job!

Another quote from Patton:

"It is wrong to mourn the men who died.

Rather we should thank God that such men lived."

thanks for your post. it's good to get an historical perspective on the good general's remarks. but i do have to comment that anyone with even an iota of understanding the military mind of it's great leaders should not be surprised. we look for, train, and advance warriors if we want a kick down the doors, kill people, and break things military. you want momma's boys that worry about every perceived slight or possible faux pas that will end up in the paper, and you might as well stay home. if i had to follow someone into battle, i'd pick this guy over a desk bound PC commando.

Hey VF,

Is it any wonder why the left is upset about the statement that was made? The left has always put more stock into words rather than actions. Are they really upset that the general enjoys killing the enemy, or upset that he actually said it?

Don't forget one of Patton's other memorable quotes:

"No poor bastard has ever won a war by dying for his country. You win wars by making the other poor bastard die for his country."

War is hell, no doubt about it. Sherman puts it best, the more hellish it is, the sooner it is over. I sometimes think we are too nice in our prosecution of this war, if we brought more hell it might be over sooner...

Hello Varifrank, from a Lucianne.com homey. A lot of L.dotters will be visiting today and no doubt bookmarking you for future excellent blog wisdom.

Nice post. I remember hearing my Mom tell us kids about her family dentist back in the 1940s using "Japs" and "Krauts" as metaphors for cavities, absessed teeth, and other evils lurking within their mouths. He'd say 'Yep, there's a Jap in the hole and we're gonna drill it right out of town...' and stuff like that. I guess that Dentist, like the gentlemen you quote above, also flunked sensitivity training.

I am a prior service Marine. Let me assure you the General speaks the language of The Corps. He gives it to us loud and clear. The warrior culture of the Corps is what he speaks. Marines are didicated to the task of killing our country's enemies. It is just that simple.

I don't want any sensitivity with my killing! Kill them ruthlessly and efficiently. And for God's sakes, liberal wussies, read a military history book NOT written by David HACKworth or at least turn to the Military Channel. Try to learn SOMETHING about people braver than you!

The thing that makes me go "hmmmmm" is when you consider that many of the same people shocked and outraged that a General will say shooting abusive terrorists is fun are often those who so vocally support rappers talking about bustin' caps in cops or bitches who be dissin' you because it is free speech and just reflects the reality of their life.
