Chris Hitchens Asks the "Question of the week"

"What happened to the human shields?"
snip...
"would not now be the ideal time for those who hate war to go to Iraq and stand outside the mosques, hospitals, schools, and women's centers that are daily subjected to murderous assaults? This would write an imperishable page in the history of American dissent."

I had forgotten how much I loathed this pretention in the daily press of 1992 and 2002.

He has four more great questions for the "anti-war" zealots. So read the whole thing already...

> 1) What about the land mines? A few years ago, a fairly broad consensus was achieved, to the effect that land mines should be regarded as an illegal and immoral method of warfare.

Oh, my god, don't encourage these *idiots*. The problems with land mines is that they are not designed to decay within a rational period of time. This should be an international standard, so that any mine which is planted becomes moot after a year or three years or something like that. THAT is when the real post-war "atrocities" occur, like farmers dying when tilling a field or kids losing a leg when running over a hill.

Land mines are one of the few "cheap" methods for fighting armor and infantry for a guerilla force.

This means not just Iraqi "insurgents" but also legitimate freedom fighters in oppressed nations.

They allow a cash-strapped resistance to combat the often well-funded military of a dictator, acting as an equalizer of sorts.
