Things to do before you die...

...Cross the Bonneville Salt Flats at night, in a full moon.
Ok, now I can mark that one off my list.
After a business trip that included side trips to Yellowstone and Wyoming, I'm now back safely from working in Salt Lake City.
Last nights crossing of the high desert was just outstandingly beautiful and not likely to be forgotten anytime soon.

You cant take a picture from a moving car at night, now can you?
I just wanted to give a general sense of the area...

In fact, with any halfway decent digital camera you can do that - speed of the camera makes the speed of the automobile irrelevant - and of course there would always be the option of simply . . . stopping to take a picture, I suppose.
No big deal, as I said.
Just disappointing.

I am a well known lame-o when it comes to camera usage. Im sure my camera is fine but I have trouble using it even when standing still in bright light with lots of time on my hands but booming along at 80 miles an hour in the dark is not the best time to be pushing buttons on the camera to find out what they do.
It is very dissapointing to be presented with real scenes of natural beauty and know that you cant really capture it in the way it really deserves to be captured. You just have to sigh and keep moving along and hope to give some sense of it later.

Funny story about crossing the salt flats.
Back in the winter of 76/77, I had left a bunch of my belongings at my great uncle's in Rock Springs while I had been working up in Pinedale.
After that job ended in late February I came back to get my stuff and head to Elko, Nevada to meet up with a friend I grew up with who lived there.
My arranged ride broke down in Salt Lake. I got a ride to west of Salt Lake, at the edge of the flats and was going to hitch hike to Elko.
Imagine someone on that road with several boxes, a pack, a bicycle and a tv. I couldn't take just any ride and passed several up. Finally after about seven hours, with darkness closing in, a guy in a pickup truck finally stopped. He had enough room to get all my stuff on board and was going past Elko. I don't recall if there was a full moon or not, I was just happy to not be spending the night along side of the road with all that stuff and it getting cold.
