when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping

Oracle Corp. Chief Executive Larry Ellison said his company may take advantage of the slumping economy to acquire other software companies at a buyer's price.

"Acquisitions that we have been looking at for some time may now be more attractive," Mr. Ellison said Friday at the software giant's annual meeting of stockholders. He added that he expects to target small-but-growing companies rather than large publicly traded ones.

I'm going to say this in the most heterosexual way I can possibly say it but I'm going to say it anyway. So here it goes:

I absolutely love this man.

You can whine and cry and talk about the "end of capitalism" if you want, Larry is going shopping while you sit around feeling sorry for yourself.

Sorry, Frank -- in Oracle PL/SQL, the empty string is Null. Not the null string, but NULL.

It's so wrong as to constitute absolute brain damage.

I very much understand the trinary logic that they're using, and there are places where its annoyances make some semblance of sense for consistency -- but empty string is no more "NULL" than zero is NULL. The empty string is to strings what zero is to numbers. But not to Oracle -- and the headaches in overcomplexifying coding by adding constant NULL tests in string comparisons is butt ugly.

You can't even just test the len of a string -- len("")==NULL.

Stupid, Senseless, and annoying.

Sorry, I can't respect a man whose Programming Language doesn't know the difference between an empty string and the concept of NULL.

That's about as accurate as the integer Zero being the same as NULL.
